As a result, governments increasingly turn to technology-driven solutions such as desalination and wastewater treatment plants. While these technologies are essential and provide much-needed relief, they often overshadow the untapped potential of Rechargeable Groundwater Sources (RGS) and existing groundwater infrastructure.
RGS remain underutilized and relatively unknown, yet in many regions they offer a cost-effective and sustainable complement to high-tech water solutions. At the same time, rehabilitating existing groundwater wells is a practical and impactful policy tool. Restoring these wells to full functionality can significantly increase water availability, reduce reliance on costly alternatives, and extend the value of prior infrastructure investments.
