With nearly half the U.S. in drought as of mid-September 2026, new NC State research warns that the rapid buildout of data centers is adding an inflexible new source of water demand on already-stressed municipal and groundwater supplies.

The Edwards Aquifer Authority declared Stage 5 drought restrictions for San Antonio after a benchmark well hit its lowest level since 1990, as nearly half the U.S. remains in drought and data centers add new strain to groundwater supplies.
